MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies say a man flying to Cuba confirmed with an American Airlines gate agent at Miami International Airport Monday morning that he didn’t have any laptop batteries in his bag ― but what he claimed he did have ensured that he would not make it to the island.
A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office arrest report states that the agent was asking Yoel Guevara-Crespo, 33, of Lake Charles, Louisiana, “the standard security questions” as he was about to board the flight to Camagüey, Cuba.
One of those, deputies said, was “Do you have any lithium batteries or incendiary devices in the bag?”
They said Guevara-Crespo responded, “No, but I have a bomb.”
“At that point, (the agent) told him that he couldn’t fly and she would be contacting her supervisor,” the report states. “(Guevara-Crespo) stated that he was joking.”
Deputies, however, said they did not treat it as a joke, took him into custody on a false bomb report charge and swept his luggage with a K-9 dog, finding no bomb.
Deputies said Guevara-Crespo’s arrest came one day after another self-proclaimed jokester, Osniel Blanco-Lopez, made a comment to another American agent about having “a grenade.”
That, they said, would land the 52-year-old southwest Miami-Dade man behind bars on the same charge.
Blanco-Lopez was out of jail on Tuesday, but Guevara-Crespo was still locked up in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $2,500 bond, having faced a judge earlier in the morning.
