MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 34-year-old man was behind bars on Wednesday morning in Miami-Dade County after a detective accused him of killing a man in 2024 outside of the Big Boy Market, a convenience store near the Buccaneer Park in Miami Gardens, records show.
A surveillance video shows Serge Jean Jr. “on the sidewalk hanging out in front of the store” on Nov. 21, 2024, at 3185 NW 207 St., near the Hard Rock Stadium, according to the Miami Gardens homicide detective’s request for a warrant.
Witnesses reported a shooting. When police officers arrived, Jean was in a “prone position ...conscious and alert ... unable to move,” the Miami Gardens detective wrote, according to the affidavit in support of the warrant.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel airlifted Jean to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital, where he died on Dec. 10, 2024, after complications with his wounds, according to the affidavit in support of the warrant.
Before Jean died, he identified his killer as “Von,” records show.
Surveillance video also shows Devon Clarke arriving at the store as the passenger of a black Nissan Maxima, according to the arrest warrant signed by Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Cristina Miranda on March 12.
Homicide detectives believe Jean punched Clarke, who stumbled backward before pulling out a gun and firing at Jean, according to the arrest warrant.
Jean tried to run away, but Clarke fired a second time, shot him in the back, and he collapsed face down, according to the arrest warrant.
Clarke caught up to Jean and shot him a third time in the head at close range before getting away in the Nissan Maxima, according to the arrest warrant.
Clarke was in handcuffs about a year and nine months later, according to police.
Miami Gardens police officers arrested Clarke at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday at 3620 NW 211 St., according to a police officer’s arrest report.
Miami-Dade County corrections booked Clarke shortly after 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, according to inmate records.
Clarke faced a charge of second-degree murder with a weapon, according to Miami-Dade County court records. He was denied bond.
Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Carmen Cabarga was set to preside over the case.
