MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A 29-year-old man accused of striking a 10-year-old girl with a dirt bike and fleeing the scene on Ocean Drive has been arrested, Miami Beach police announced Thursday in a press release.
According to police, Mandrell Ceydrec Rolle Jr., of Pembroke Pines, was arrested Wednesday following the Aug. 22 hit-and-run crash.
Rolle faces one count each of leaving the scene of a crash involving injury, reckless driving and resisting an officer without violence.
According to police, the incident began around 7 p.m. on Aug. 22 when multiple 911 calls were made about four dirt bike riders allegedly driving recklessly at high speeds along Collins Avenue in the Art Deco District.
Responding officers located the riders and observed the reckless behavior, police said.
Police said the group continued onto Ocean Drive before stopping in the 700 block.
Officers approached the riders on foot and took one of them, identified as Kasshun Williams, into custody without incident, authorities said.
Police said Rolle saw the officers and fled at a high rate of speed despite repeated commands to stop.
As he fled, Rolle struck a 10-year-old girl who was on the sidewalk with her mother, according to police.
The impact knocked the girl to the ground, injuring her elbow and leg. She was treated at the scene by the Miami Beach Fire Department.
Miami Beach police said detectives identified Rolle during their investigation and learned that he was on federal probation for felony possession of a machine gun.
Detectives obtained a warrant for his arrest, and Rolle was taken into custody Wednesday with assistance from the City of Miami Police Department’s Tactical Robbery Unit.
“There is zero tolerance for reckless behavior that endangers the lives of our residents and visitors,” Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne A. Jones said in a statement. “Driving a dirt bike recklessly, striking a 10-year-old child and fleeing without rendering aid is unacceptable.”
Jones said the department would use its resources to identify and hold accountable those who endanger others in Miami Beach.
“If you choose to endanger innocent people in Miami Beach, we will use every available resource to identify you and hold you accountable,” Jones said.
As of Thursday morning, Rolle was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $2,650 bond.
