FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A Fort Lauderdale resident shared surveillance video he said shows a thief removing envelopes from his mailbox — including some containing his new U.S. Passport and U.S. Citizenship certificate.
Christopher Urbina said his front-door surveillance camera recorded the thief who was wearing a face mask.
“To become a citizen is a very big deal, and it’s a process,” said Urbina, who was born in Honduras.
The video showed the mail theft shortly after 2:10 p.m. on Aug. 28. Urbina said the experience affected his sense of safety in the neighborhood, so he is considering moving out.
“I just moved here like a month ago ... If someone feels so comfortable to steal my mail, like what other things can happen over here? I don’t know,” Urbina said.
Also in Broward County, Ring surveillance video showed a woman stealing from mailboxes at about 6:05 a.m. on April 27 in Deerfield Beach.
In Miami-Dade County, surveillance video showed a man who was riding a bicycle stealing from several mailboxes at 2:30 a.m. on July 31st at the Parkview Condominiums.
Urbina said he reported the case to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. The agency welcomes tips at 1-877-876-2455.
Detectives ask anyone with information about this or other cases who wants to remain anonymous to call Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477 in Broward or 305-471-8477 in Miami-Dade.
