ANDROS ISLAND, Bahamas — Authorities in the Bahamas are searching for four people who were aboard a plane that went missing.

According to officials, officers on Andros Island are looking for the aircraft after it may have gone down in the waters off Red Bays.

Police in the Bahamas said they received a report around 2:20 p.m. Monday regarding an airplane that may have gone into the water.

The plane had four people on board, according to authorities, and it departed Great Harbour Cay around 11:10 a.m. with a destination of Opa-locka in South Florida.

Officials said air traffic control lost contact with the aircraft when it was approximately 13 miles west of Andros Island.

Family members told Local 10 News that the four people aboard the plane were Mario Lamar, 80, his wife Lili Lamar, 79, and their grandchildren Sofia Sosa, 28, and Christian Sosa, 22.

They also said Mario Lamar is an experienced pilot who has been flying for 40 years.

According to relatives, the family was tracking the flight path when for some reason, the plane turned around, and that’s when they said they lost contact.

The family said they immediately contacted authorities and are now asking anyone in the Bahamas who sees anything in the ocean to let authorities know.

Efforts are underway to locate the missing plane, but officials said a search by the U.S. Coast Guard was temporarily postponed due to inclement weather.
