FLORIDA CITY, Fla. — The Florida City Commission voted Tuesday evening to terminate City Manager James Poag, less than a year after he was appointed to the position.

The commission voted 3-2 to terminate Poag’s employment, effective immediately.

Mayor Charlotte Thompson, Vice Mayor Ronda Cobb and Commissioner Trina Wilborn voted in favor of the termination.

Commissioners James Gold and Richard Brown voted against it.

No reason for Poag’s termination was included in the information provided by the city Wednesday.

According to the city’s website, Poag was appointed Florida City manager in December 2025. In the position, he oversaw the city’s day-to-day operations and was responsible for carrying out the laws of the City Charter and directives of the City Council.

Poag has more than 20 years of experience in local, county and regional government.

He holds a doctorate in organizational leadership from Nova Southeastern University, a Master of Public Management from St. Thomas University and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Florida A&M University.
