PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — Questions remain over whether pilot inaction led to Sunday’s deadly Amazon cargo plane crash, including a potential failure to do a go-around ― aborting the landing and trying again ― before the plane overshot the runway at Miami International Airport.
On Friday, Local 10 News got a look at what goes into a go-around.
Reporter Jeff Derderian went up with pilot Dao Chen, the co-owner of Dynasty Aviation at North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines.
It becomes too late to do a go-around, Chen said, “when you touch down beyond where the airplane is supposed to touch down.”
The Amazon cargo plane crew, employed by 21 Air, appears to have not done a go-around and then overshot the runway. Excessive landing speed was perhaps also a factor.
“And you’re thinking about a go-around well before you get near the airport?” Dederian asked Chen.
“Constantly,” Chen replied.
He later added, “Once we start climbing, we can start configuring the airplane back to our original configuration. So we never hear from anybody in the aviation community is saying a go-around is a bad decision. It’s always a safe decision.”
