Boaters help save puppy, sea turtle off Fla. Keys

MARATHON, Fla. - Officials say boaters rescued a three-pound puppy and a 370-pound sea turtle from the waters off the Florida Keys over the Memorial Day weekend.

The turtle was recovering Wednesday at the Turtle Hospital in the Keys.

According to published reports, the puppy was reunited with its owner after Geni and George Hernandez spotted it swimming about two miles offshore Sunday.

A reunion took place after a friend recalled seeing someone in hysterics over a lost puppy and tracked her down.

The Zinmeister family from Winter Haven spotted the turtle, which was ensnared in a crab trap line, and called the U.S. Coast Guard. Officials there put them in touch with the turtle hospital and officials rescued the turtle, estimated to be 60 to 80 years old.
