Boy, 5, killed in early-morning crash in Homestead

Driver arrested after crash

HOMESTEAD, Fla. - A 5-year-old boy died Monday in an early-morning crash in Homestead.

The crash occurred on Campbell Drive and Southwest 152nd Street in Homestead.

According to police, a car travelling west clipped a red car traveling east, causing a near-head-on collision.

Jason Santa Maria, 5, was in the passenger seat of the red car as his mother's aunt drove him to school. Police said the child was not in a booster seat, as required by law.

Jason was pronounced dead at Children's Hospital.

Homicide investigators said the impact of the crash was strong, but the child could have survived if he had been in a booster seat.

The drivers of both cars were taken to Kendall Regional Hospital.

Police arrested the driver of a silver pickup truck, Alegre Saucedo, 48, who they said had no driver's license.
