Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said a deputy spotted Burns driving erratically late Wednesday night when he attempted a traffic stop. Herrin said the deputy followed Burns to a campground, where he ditched his moped and crawled underneath a parked truck in an attempt to hide.

After Burns was ordered out from under the truck, he ran off and jumped into the water in an attempt to swim away, Herrin said.

A man on a skiff was passing by, and Burns climbed on, Herrin said. Once he realized the skiff was headed back to shore, Burns jumped back into the water, Herrin said.

Burns swam to a small mangrove island, where deputies found him and took him into custody, Herrin said.
