FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - A Fort Lauderdale police officer who was shot outside a pub over the Fourth of July weekend has been released from the hospital.

Earlier Monday, Mark Shotwell's wife, Camille, spoke at a news conference regarding his recovery.

"The one thing I do want to get across is that we want to heal and move on," said Camille. "We would like everyone to respect our privacy."

Shotwell was critically injured July 3 after trying to come to the aid of a woman who was having some sort of domestic dispute with a man outside Maguires Hill 16 at 535 N. Andrews Ave.

Police said Shotwell and the woman knew each other and she begged him to help her. That's when a man got out of the car she was in and had a shootout with the Fort Lauderdale police officer.

Shotwell fatally shot the suspect, and he was shot multiple times.

Shotwell was then taken to Broward Health Medical Center.

"He's gone through two operations, but he's on the road to recovery," said Dr. Fahim Habib.

Habib said Shotwell is lucky that the pub was so close to the hospital, and that may have helped saved his life.
