Man dies after boat crash off Dania Beach

Police say speed might have been factor in crash

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – A man died and a woman was transported to the hospital Friday night after their boat crashed off Dania Beach.

Police say the 18-foot boat was heading west on the Dania Beach cutoff canal and trying to reach Hollywood when it struck a bridge piling by Old Griffin Road.

The accident happened in a slow and no-wake zone.

Although the man was not thrown off the boat, he died. A woman, who police believe was driving the boat, was taken to the hospital.

Investigators are working to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash. Speed might have triggered the accident, according to police.

"It's very early on in the investigation but all of the physical evidence would point to the fact that speed did indeed play a role in this particular accident," said Florida Fish and Wildlife Officer Jorge Pino.
