Police said they arrived at the scene to find the incoherant victim lying on the ground and the suspect, Julio Mesa, 23, sitting on the stairs of the building.

Authorities said the victim was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital by Miami paramedics. His condition deteriorated at the hospital and he was moved to JMH's Ryder Trauma Center, where he died Feb. 1, police said.

According to the arrest report, the Miami-Dade County medical examiner's office conducted an autoposy on the victim Feb. 3 and determined that he had died from complications of blunt force head trauma.

Police said a witness told detectives he or she saw Mesa repeatedly punch the victim in the face, causing the victim to fall to the ground. The witness said Mesa then kicked the victim in the head and upper body multiple times.

Mesa faces a second-degree murder charge. A motive for the fatal beating is unclear.
