Miami firefighter 1 of 2 to die in Brownsville shooting

Chad Davis, 23, fatally shot early Saturday

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A city of Miami Department of Fire-Rescue firefighter was one of two who died after a shooting early Saturday morning in Miami-Dade County's Brownsville neighborhood, according to authorities.

Firefighter Chadrick "Chad" Davis, 23, and Sir-Ernest Terrell Williams, 22, were attending a friend's wake at Northwest 31st Place and Northwest 44th Street when the shots were fired.

Williams' grandmother Maxine McKinnon said he was expecting a baby and the man Davis and Williams were mourning was supposed to be the baby's godfather.

"He had his friends out here in the streets, but he was a good person," McKinnon said.

Witnesses told detectives there were several gunmen involved in the drive-by shooting. Miami-Dade Police Department was investigating. But Miami detectives were assisting.

"I'm very saddened by the loss of one of our firefighters and the continued senseless violence in our community," Miami City Manager Daniel J. Alfonso said.

Davis, a two year veteran, was the son of retired Fire Lieutenant Malcolm "Chip" Davis and he was Fire Chief Maurice Kemp's godson.

"Not only was Chad a very good young firefighter, but he was also an incredible young man," Kemp said.

MDPD spokesperson Jennifer Capote said the shooting was affecting a family who had been constantly grieving.

"We need to stop this madness," Capote said.

Firefighters lined up along Northwest 19th Street and 10th Avenue to pay their respects.

"As we try to make sense of the senseless act of violence, we ask that you pray for the family and the members of the City of Miami Fire Department," MFR Capt. Ignatius "Iggy" Carroll said.

A procession followed the vehicle with Davis' body on its way to the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's office.

"This hits home and it hurts," Miami police spokeswoman Kenia Fallat wrote on her Facebook status. "My heart goes out to our Miami Fire brothers."
