Miami Police: Chevrolet Impala hit, killed Juan Valerio

MIAMI – Police handed out flyers Wednesday as they searched for the driver who hit and killed a 67-year-old man and then drove away.

Juan Valerio was hit and killed by a 2006-2010 silver Chevrolet Impala in the 2500 block of NW 27th Avenue in Miami about 10:11 p.m. Jan. 18, police say.

"He just drove away. My father instantly died," said Marllan Valerio. "We haven't even been able to bury my father because this is a criminal investigation."

Police believe the driver likely lives in the area.

"Most of the people that live in this area stay in this area. This is a high traffic avenue. It may not be local but we're working under the premise that it is local," said Miami-Dade Police Det. Christopher Cuccaro. "With the help of the community, we'll be able to capture this person."

The family of Valerio hope the driver comes forward.

"The only thing I can do right now is try to make justice for him," said Marllan Valerio. "I really feel in my spirit that my father is asking for justice right now."

Investigators believe the car has damage to its right headlight area.

Anyone with information on the fatal crash is asked to call police at 305-471-2425.
