Police: Robber shoots woman in face

Family holds vigil for Evelyn Matomoro, mother of 2

MIAMI - A robber shot a woman in the face after she handed over her purse, according to authorities.

It happened as the woman left the Cafe Ruyi restaurant at 5300 NW 7th Avenue in Miami Thursday. Police said Evelyn Matomoro was shot even though she gave the robber what he demanded.

"He shoots her deliberately and in broad daylight after she gives him her purse," said Officer Kenia Reyes with the Miami Police Department.

The man fled the scene in a possibly gray Dodge Charger and is on the loose, police said.

The victim was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Unit, where she is listed in critical condition. Matomoro's two daughters, husband, and other family members held a vigil at the hospital late Thursday.

"This woman is clinging to life at Jackson Memorial Hospital as the result of a senseless crime," said Reyes.
