FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Navy sailors will soon be able to serve on a ship that bears the name of a South Florida city where they have enjoyed plenty of rest and relaxation.

The U.S. Navy announced Monday that it will name a new ship the USS Fort Lauderdale.

The new vessel will be a littoral combat ship which is part of the Navy's new generation of small, fast and highly maneuverable warships.

"Receiving this honor from the United States Navy represents one of the most prestigious accolades in the history of our City," said Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler.

The naming of the ship comes after decades of sailors spending their time off in Fort Lauderdale during the city's annual Fleet Week.

Fort Lauderdale's ties to the Navy go back to the 1830's when "swamp sailors" supported Major William Lauderdale in the Second Seminole War.

The city also served as a Naval training center during World War II.

"Having a ship named in our City's honor provides us with an opportunity to build upon the unique history, tradition, friendship and respect we have established with the U.S. Navy, while showing our appreciation to the courageous men and women who sacrifice each and every day to protect our liberty and preserve our freedom," added Mayor Seiler.  "We look forward to providing the services, resources and support to ensure the project's success."

The new ship will be equipped with advanced core weapons systems and will patrol areas in coastal waters.
