MIAMI – Archeologists are unearthing artifacts in downtown Miami.

A dig found Tequesta Indian artifacts near Southeast 3rd Street and 3rd Avenue.

"That asphalt for the parking lot was laid down in 1950," said archeologist Raymond Skinner. "This was the Tequesta village."

Archeologists have found tools, pottery, and shells so far.

"When they are making hammers, they kind of cut the bottom off," said Skinner.

A new movie theater will be built at the dig site, but before construction crews can begin, all the relics must be excavated.

"I think very few people understand the amount of archeology that is inside or underneath Miami. People have been living here for at least 4,000 years," said Skinner.
