Volunteers spruce up home for human trafficking victims

Event part of YMCA's 'Day of Caring'

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – Volunteers spent Martin Luther King, Jr. Day working to transform an old building into a home for victims of human trafficking.

Local 10's Calvin Hughes and others arrived at the site at 9 a.m. Monday. The YMCA of Broward County organized the service project.

The new home for victims of human trafficking needed everything, including sweeping floors, moving furniture, mopping, and landscaping. But the 80 volunteers were up to the task.

"It helps me give back to the community cause there's some boys and girls, they don't have what we have," said Santiago Nunez.

The new home opens later this year as South Florida has become a hot spot for human trafficking, especially in Broward County.
