Woman, 25, killed driving wrong way on Palmetto Expressway

Monday morning crash shuts down highway for hours

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A wrong-way crash on the Palmetto Expressway early Monday morning killed a 25-year-old woman and left a man in serious condition, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP spokeswoman Indiana Villalonga said troopers received a call about 4:30 a.m. that a dark-colored Honda was traveling south in the northbound lanes of the Palmetto Expressway near Coral Way. It was shortly thereafter that troopers were called to a head-on collision at the same location.

"When we get a call that it's a wrong-way driver, we need to get on scene as soon as possible because, especially on the interstates, nothing comes out good when we get one of those calls," Villalonga said.

The sedan hit an older-model Ford Explorer, which rolled over. The man driving the SUV was taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

The crash shut down the highway for hours as authorities worked to determine the cause of the crash.

Villalonga said it isn't known if drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.

The identities of the drivers has not been released.
