Lyft driver dead, 6 hurt in Miami crash

Victims taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center

MIAMI – A Lyft driver died and six others were injured Sunday in a crash in Miami.

The two-car crash took place about 2 p.m. at Southwest 17th Street and Southwest 25th Avenue.

A Volkswagen Jetta, which belonged to the Lyft driver, and a black BMW collided at the intersection and were sent skidding into a front yard, police said. The driver of the Jetta died at the scene of the crash.

Sources identified the driver who died as Robert Torra.

"Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this tragic accident," Lyft spokeswoman Alexandra LaManna said. "We have been in contact with Robert's family during this unimaginably difficult time, and are available to support law enforcement in their investigation."

Miami Department of Fire-Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll said two women and four men, who range in age from 25 to 35, were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.

Several neighbors in the area attempted to help the victims.

"It was really scary," Eric Suarez said.

Suarez said he was watching television when he heard the crash. He said he looked outside and saw the cars in his front yard.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

One man told Local 10 News that it's not uncommon for people to speed in the area. This is the second crash to happen in front of the home, he said.

The intersection was shut down after the crash.
