Man arrested after Coral Springs double shooting

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - Coral Springs police have arrested a man accused of shooting his estranged wife and father-in-law in front of his four-year-old son, according to authorities.

Thomas Maffei was arrested Friday night after a shooting on the 10500 block of Sample Road, police said.

Police said they were called to the scene around 8:20 p.m. Friday night after a woman reported a disturbance at her home. When they arrived, they found 40-year-old Katherine Maffei and her father, 67-year-old Robert Ranta suffering from gunshot wounds, police said. Ranta was holding Maffei's four-year-old son, who was not injured.

Police said both victims were taken to Broward Health North in serious condition. Police said Thomas Maffei, 45, immediately surrendered to authorities.

According to Coral Springs police sergeant Brad McKeone, Katherine and Thomas Maffei are currently separated and going through a divorce.

Police said the suspect was booked into the Broward County Main Jail. Authorities said he is charged with two counts of attempted first degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, armed burglary, two counts of false imprisonment and child abuse.

The child is currently staying with relatives.
