POMPANO BEACH, Fla. - A 31-year-old man was struck and killed by a train on the corner of Northeast 48th Street and North Dixie Highway Saturday night, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

Detectives said the man walked around the gate as lights flashed and the train conductor beeped the horn to alert him.

The conductor couldn't stop the train in time and told police that the man appeared surprised to see the train just before impact, authorities said.

Early reports suggested the man was somehow distracted by a phone or handheld device.

The train stopped after the accident and half a dozen squad cars remained at the scene while police attempted to notify the next of kin.
