Police say man suffered burns to face, both legs, arms

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. - A 54-year-old man was taken to the hospital Thursday after a boat fire and explosion in the Intracoastal, north of Atlantic Boulevard.

The fire quickly burned itself out as Pompano Beach Fire Rescue arrived at the scene at 4 p.m. Thursday.

The man was taken off his boat by a Broward Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol deputy and brought to a waiting Pompano Beach rescue unit.

Police said the man had burns to both of his legs and arms, along with his face. Fire Rescue crews took him to Broward Health North.

The captain had just pulled away from the docks after filling the 21- to 25-foot open fisherman boat with fuel at the marina, located 125 North Riverside Drive.

Authorities said the man suffered burns to 30 to 40 percent of his body and will be taken to The University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Burn Center in Miami.

The exact cause of the fire and explosion is under investigation.
