OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – About 300 crushed vehicles burned at a recycling plant in Opa-locka on Monday, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
The fire started about 9:15 a.m. Monday at Trademark Metals Recycling, 3440 NW 135th Street. Plumes of smoke poured into the sky west of Interstate 95.
"We actually thought it was these buildings that were on fire," said Candace Kelly.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue had 27 units at the plant battling the fire. Workers at the plant helped firefighters disassemble the pile to extinguish the blaze.
"The material is cooled. That material is moved to get to more hot spots and fire underneath," said Michelle Fayed with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
It's unclear what started the fire. A few units stayed at the plant to monitor hotspots after extinguishing the fire.
Northwest 135th Street has since reopened.
