MIAMI – Students may not be happy to learn of the new proposal by Miami-Dade Public Schools to make up dates lost by Hurricane Irma.
The school system was forced to cancel seven days of school in September due to the storm.

Miami-Dade Public Schools officials claim they still exceed the minimum instructional hours required by the state, but feel the loss of time impacted student learning.
Unlike Broward County, which only changed two early-release days to full days, Miami-Dade plans on taking two previously-scheduled teacher planning days and making them full days, while doing the same to three early-release days.
The additional full-day schedule would look as follows:
- January 19, 2018 (previously a teacher planning day)
- February 15, 2018 (previously a secondary early release day)
- April 19, 2018 (previously a secondary early release day)
- April 20, 2018 (previously a teacher planning day)
- May 17, 2018 (previously a secondary early release day)
In addition, two dates would be converted to full days for Adult/Vocational students:
- January 19, 2018 (previously a teacher planning day); and
- April 20, 2018 (previously a teacher planning day)
The proposed calendar changes will be presented at the next school board meeting on Oct. 11.
