MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The police chief in Miami Gardens has been fired after he was arrested on suspicion of soliciting prostitution.
Miami Gardens Police Chief Stephen Johnson was arrested Friday night at a Dania Beach hotel, according to a Broward Sheriff's Office arrest affidavit.
An advertisement was placed in the escort section of a website listing a telephone number and price rates, including a two-girl special, deputies said.
A man, who was later identified as Johnson, called the telephone number provided in the ad. Deputies said an undercover detective answered the call and had several conversations with Johnson.
During the conversations, Johnson said he wanted to do everything and the detective asked him if he had any special requests, the affidavit said.
Johnson said he wanted the detective to wear heels since he had a fetish for heels, the report said. Johnson wanted a 30-minute session, which the detective said would cost $80, the report said.
The detective said there was a two-girl special, to which Johnson is alleged to have replied that he was interested. At that point, the detective told Johnson the price for the two women would be $100 for 30 minutes, to which he agreed, deputies said.
At 6:20 p.m. Friday, Johnson arrived at the hotel, walked up to the room and knocked on the door. He was allowed in the hotel room by an undercover detective, the report said.
While inside the room, Johnson gave the detective $100 as agreed upon during the phone conversation, the report said.
Shortly after, Johnson was arrested. Inside Johnson's right rear pocket were two condoms, according to the report.
The chief was later taken to the main Broward County jail.
Johnson was released from jail on bond Saturday morning and told reporters that the stress of his job overwhelmed him.
"It just overwhelmed me," Johnson said. "The stress overwhelmed me, and I made a very bad decision to deal with that moment that I've never experienced before."
Johnson's employment with the city of Miami Gardens was immediately terminated, Miami Gardens police said.
Assistant Chief Antonio Brooklen will serve as the interim chief until further notice.
"We remain committed to excellence and integrity on every level," the Miami Gardens Police Department said in a statement. "We will not allow Mr. Johnson's bad judgment to reflect negatively on the hardworking officers of the city of Miami Gardens and the residents they serve on a daily basis."
Johnson said his poor decision was "totally out of character."
