MIAMI – An investigation into a stabbing led to a police-involved shooting early Tuesday morning in Miami.
The shooting happened after officers received a call about 10 p.m. Monday about a woman who had been stabbed in the abdomen at a home near Southwest 36th Avenue and West Flagler Street.
"It was a savage attack," Miami Police Deputy Chief Luis Cabrera said.
Police said the victim was stabbed multiple times by her ex-husband, Manuel Emilio Alvarez Hernandez, 34, who fled the scene in a Chevrolet Cruze.
"She was on the phone outside and he asked her, 'What are you doing?' And she said, 'What do you mean, what am I doing?'" a witness told Local 10 News. "Then she started yelling out of nowhere and I told my mother, because I was in the car, 'Mom, he hit her in the stomach.' And my mom said, 'No, he has something in his hand. I think he stabbed her.'"
An alert was issued for the suspect, who police said came back to the scene just after 12:30 a.m. and rear-ended an officer's parked patrol cruiser.
Police said Hernandez, who was bleeding from his wrists, got out of the car while holding a large knife and confronted one of the officers. Police said the officer fired his gun twice, shooting Hernandez in the shoulder.
Hernandez was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in stable condition. His ex-wife, identified as Zuarmis Rubio Gonzalez, 36, was also taken to the hospital. Police said she was in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
The officer, who police said is 23 and has been on the force for seven months, was not hurt. The investigation is ongoing.
The rookie officer is still in his probationary period with the Miami Police Department and was placed on paid administrative leave after the shooting, as is standard during a police-involved shooting.
