A total of 54 candidates had applied for the job in a city of just more than 20,000 residents near St. Louis. The town made headlines around the world when Michael Brown, 18, was fatally shot by white Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson.

Moss told the Herald that he applied for the post after speaking with a relative in St. Louis and remembering his teenage years in Overtown, where he witnessed violence all around him.

Moss first started working for the Miami Police Department as a public service aide in 1984. He is scheduled to retire from the police department in September.
