Miramar police search for white cargo van in fatal hit-and-run

Police say van has left front-end damage

MIRAMAR, Fla. – Police are searching for a white cargo van in a hit-and-run crash that killed a man early Friday morning in Miramar.

Miramar police Officer Tania Rues said the victim was crossing the 2400 block of U.S. Highway 441 about midnight when he was fatally struck.

Rues said the driver fled south on U.S. 441.

"I'd like to think that gentleman actually was startled (and) did know what he hit. We'd hope that," said Todd White, whose business' surveillance cameras captured the crash. "(He was) coming across the street and he was, like, in the middle lane... very hard to see. I think the driver had a hard time seeing."

"It is a dangerous area and the police try to control it, but no matter what they don't obey the law -- they don't obey," locksmith Tony Gonzales said.

Gonzales told Local 10 News that people speed up and down the road and there have been plenty of accidents.

"Would you jaywalk here?" Local 10 News reporter Todd Tongen asked.

"I would never cross this street, never," Gonzales said. "No way. I wouldn't take a chance. I would go straight to Hallandale Boulevard on the corner and wait for the light, and even with that I would have to be careful."

Police said the cargo van likely has left front-end damage.

Police have not identified the victim, who did not have any identification on him.

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
