Motorcyclist killed in crash on I-95

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. - A motorcyclist died early Sunday morning when he lost control and was thrown into a canal on I-95 near Stirling Road.

Derrick Raynard Thomas, 35, of Lantana died at the scene according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Thomas lost control of his Kawasaki motorcycle shortly before 1:30 a.m. Sunday, while riding northbound on I-95 south of Stirling Road. He hit a barrier and was ejected into a canal. The motorcycle skidded off the roadway and into a patch of trees where it burst into flames.

FHP says Thomas was wearing a helmet.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
