WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States is responding to back-to-back earthquakes in Venezuela, confirming he spoke with acting President Delcy Rodriguez about relief efforts.
Search and rescue teams from Fairfax County, Virginia, and Los Angeles have been deployed to assist.
“The most immediate need right now is search and rescue efforts — they have a much-collapsed building and so they’ll need a lot of help in terms of digging through that,” Rubio said.
President Donald Trump took to social media to signal broader support, saying the U.S. “stands ready, willing, and able to help” and that he had instructed all government agencies to “get ready to move quickly.” The response includes medical supplies and humanitarian resources.
Rodriguez thanked the Trump administration for what she called its “support and solidarity.”
“I want to thank President Donald Trump and his government, who has been in permanent contact with the Venezuelan government,” she said.
