COOPER CITY, Fla. - Two families who survived a fire at their townhouse in Cooper City are thankful for friends and neighbors who are helping the families get back on their feet.
"I felt really scared and afraid, but I knew that we would make it out because God was with us," said Jasmine Hansen, 11.
"We just watched the house go up in flames," said Deborah Patterson.
Two families -- made up of two single mothers and their four children -- shared the townhouse at 12230 SW 50th Place, which went up in flames on Sunday morning. The six, including a 3-week-old boy, escaped the fire.
"Every day I'm getting a little better. Then I think about it, and I'm crying inside and I try to not show it," said Jasmine Hansen.
A dog was killed in the fire. The families credit Dylan Stapp, 8, with saving their lives.
"And, then I saw smoke, and then I ran to the kitchen and saw fire," said Stapp. "I screamed, 'Fire!' and then I ran upstairs and screamed 'Fire!' even louder."
"I can't believe how fast everything spread from some flames and smoke in the kitchen to the whole house being on fire within a couple minutes," said Jennifer Hansen.
"Starting from scratch. We have absolutely nothing. I feel like I'm a newborn baby right now," said Patterson.
The Red Cross has provided the two families with a hotel room.
"I see this on TV and I always say, 'Oh my God, what are they going to do?'" said Patterson. "And, now it's me. I don't even know what to do."
Neighbors and friends visited the families Monday to drop off clothes and other things.
"I've gotten her some clothes, blankets, and burp bibs," said Jennie Ramirez.
"This is for you. Some blankets and stuff and shirts and hopefully stuff that you can use," said one man who saw the families. "Hopefully, the community can get together and bring you more and get you back on your feet in time for Christmas."
"People have been so nice. My neighbors, my friends, everybody has come through. They brought me diapers and shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, clothes, anything that I need," said Hansen.
"I'm just so happy we're all alive, you know. I'm just happy we're alive," said Patterson.
