Highway reopens after barricaded man taken into custody in Miami-Dade

Don Shula Expressway closed in both directions during standoff

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Police have reopened a major South Florida highway after a man who barricaded himself in a truck was taken into custody.

The Don Shula Expressway in southwest Miami-Dade County had been closed off in both directions, as was Sunset Drive between Southwest 88th Avenue and 92nd Avenue.

The unidentified man was threatening to commit suicide while sitting in a black pickup truck near railroad tracks just off the highway.

Police rerouted thousands of commuters heading onto the highway during rush hour. Traffic was backed up for miles in both directions.

The man surrendered to authorities just before 5 p.m.
