STUART, Fla. - A woman hired to clean a Stuart home was arrested after police said she stole a $350,000 ring.

Martin County deputies said Robert Hill reported a diamond and platinum ring missing from his residence Friday. He told investigators it was last seen when his wife left it in the kitchen on Dec. 21, the same day a cleaning service was there.

Police said they discovered one of the house cleaners, Cody Mejias, 26, had sold the ring for $4,800 to Jensen Beach Jewelers.

On Monday, investigators spoke to Mejias, who admitted that she had stolen the ring and sold it, according to the Martin County Sheriff's Office. Police said Mejias told them she had needed the money to feed her children, and that she used the money she received for food, gas, Christmas gifts and bills.

Police said Mejias, who was arrested and charged with grand theft, wrote a letter of apology to the victims.
