Police identify elderly woman hit, killed by bus

Victim identified as Barbara Rubenstein

AVENTURA, Fla. - Police identified an 84-year-old woman who was hit and killed by a Miami-Dade County bus in Aventura Thursday.

The crash happened at the intersection of NE 199th Street and 29th Place about 6:15 p.m. Thursday.

On Friday, police identified the woman as Barbara Rubenstein.

"By the time I got there, they were winding down their investigation," said Bruce Sultan, Rubenstein's son-in-law.

Sultan she had arrived in South Florida last week, two days after celebrating Thanksgiving with her family up north in Chicago. He said Rubenstein was walking home from Publix with a few groceries.

"For about the past hour before that, we were calling and didn't get any answer, so when we came back here and saw the lights and went over to take a look," said Sultan.

It's unclear if Rubenstein was in a crosswalk when she was hit. Nearly two years ago to the day, a man was hit and killed by Miami-Dade Transit bus while he was standing on the sidewalk.

"There are cars coming this way. There are cars coming this way, and there are cars coming this way," said Tony Aip.

"Too busy now this time. Forget it," said Gisella Santos.

Miami-Dade homicide detectives are still trying to determine if the bus had the right of the way and whether lighting at the intersection could have been a factor. The street light at the corner where Rubenstein crossed was out last night. Crews replaced it Friday morning.
