MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - A couple was charged in a child abuse case after a 4-year-old boy told police his mother's boyfriend choked him and punched him in the stomach.

Mirta Alfonso, 25, and Gabby Cancel, 23, were arrested on Thursday. The alleged abuse happened at 152 S. Shore Drive, Miami Beach, on September 4th

According to the arrest report, the boy told police his "mom's babe," identified as Cancel, choked him and punched him in the stomach. The boy told police Cancel said he would hit him again if the boy told his mother.

Alfonso's son was taken to Mt. Sinai then to Miami Children's Hospital, where he had surgery after receiving blunt force trauma to the abdomen. The boy had several inches of his bowels removed after they ruptured and had bruises on his stomach and back. Investigators said the boy was unable to hold down food.

When police went to their Miami Beach apartment, they didn't find the couple. Detectives said Alfonso and Cancel had already moved to an apartment in Miami, where they were arrested.

As officers tried arresting Cancel, he tried running away but fell down a flight of stairs. He was then taken into custody.

Alfonso was arrested after police said she misled detectives about where Cancel lived and what his name was.

Cancel was charged with aggravated child abuse and assault. Alfonso was charged with accessory after the fact and resisting officer with violence.

The boy remains in the hospital. The Department of Children and Families is investigating.
