Local 10 News spoke with the Democratic congresswoman from South Florida on Friday at an event for the 5000 Role Models of Excellence project at Jungle Island in Miami.

Wilson, 83, had sparked concerns about her health after being absent in Washington for a full month, missing more than 40 votes on the House floor.

“(He said,) ‘You take care of everyone, but you’ve got to take care of yourself this time.’ So I’ve been postponing and postponing and postponing, and then I said, ‘stop.’ He said ‘Stop, we have to do this,’” the congresswoman said.

Wilson, who said she has stitches on her eye from the surgery, said she still needs to be cleared by her doctor, but hopes to return to the nation’s capital next Wednesday.
