MONROE COUNTY, Fla. — Voters across the Florida Keys are casting their ballots in Florida’s 2026 primary election, with several federal, statewide and local contests on the ballot.
The races voters see on their ballot will depend on their party affiliation and where they live in Monroe County.
Florida is a closed-primary state, meaning voters generally may vote only in the primary of the political party with which they are registered. Nonpartisan races are open to all eligible voters.
Unlike some other South Florida counties, Monroe County does not have a contested congressional primary this year.
In Congressional District 28 -- which covers Monroe County along with the southwest portion of Miami-Dade County, including Homestead and Cutler Bay -- Republican incumbent Carlos Gimenez and Democrat Phil “Felipe” Ehr are each unopposed in their respective party primaries. Eddy Rojas is running without party affiliation in the general election.
The state legislative races affecting Monroe County also have no contested party primaries. Republican Ana Maria Rodriguez and Democrat Jose Antonio Stoute are unopposed for their respective nominations in Florida Senate District 40.
Republican incumbent Jim Mooney is unopposed in Florida House District 120.
Monroe County races
Several local contests, however, give Keys voters choices in the primary.
The Republican primary for Monroe County Commission District 2 features Michelle Lincoln and George Lopez.
Republican voters will also decide the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District 2 race between Phillip L. Goodman and Alex Osborn.
School Board races
Because School Board elections are nonpartisan, eligible voters can participate regardless of political party.
In School Board District 1, Theresa Axford and Darren Horan are competing for the seat.
In District 5, incumbent Sue Woltanski faces challenger Chelyn Shaw. Woltanski is seeking a third term after first winning election in 2018, while Shaw is making her first run for public office.
Monroe County voters also have a nonpartisan judicial contest on the ballot.
Key West races
In Key West, residents will be selecting their choice for mayor, along with several commission seats and a couple utility board member seats.
