Florida primary: Coverage of U.S. House races for the 22nd Congressional District

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — The primary election for Florida’s 22nd Congressional District is ongoing on Tuesday for both the Republican and Democratic parties.

The U.S. Census reported in 2024 that the district is home to about 804,159 people. It covers about 250 square miles in Broward and Palm Beach counties, according to the Census Reporter. The congressional district now also covers Collier and Hendry counties in southwest Florida after the Florida Legislature passed a congressional map redistricting earlier this year.

Republican primary

The ballot includes seven candidates.

MICHAEL CARBONARA

The fintech entrepreneur is a father of two. He faced criticism over reports of ties to a controversial data center in Michigan.

Carbonara, 43, who was born in New York, is the founder and former chief executive officer of Ibanera, a Miami-based digital banking company.

BELINDA KEISER

Keiser, 67, who was born in the Philippines, earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Florida State University and an MBA from Nova Southeastern University.

CASEY ASKAR

Askar, 57, a retired U.S. Marine, is the president of Askar Brands, a multi-brand restaurant management and franchising company.

DR. HERBERT ‘HERBIE’ WERTHEIM

Wertheim, 87, who was born in Philadelphia, is an optometrist and entrepreneur. He is the founder of Brain Power, an optical products manufacturer.

DANIEL FRANZESE

Franzese, who was born in New York, earned an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business.

DAVID BURCK

The retired U.S. Marine and former detective was born in Tampa and is a real estate agent.

TERRI HASDORFF

Hasdorff, who was born in Alabama, graduated from Harvard and Oxford universities and works in business development.

Democratic primary

The ballot includes two candidates.

PIA DANDIYA

The daughter of Indian immigrants is a Harvard grad who served as a teacher and school principal.

KAYSIA EARLEY

The attorney is a graduate of Howard University and St. Thomas School of Law.
