House Democrats postpone gun hearing due to hurricane

Lawmakers skeptical anything on gun control could pass.

WASHINGTON – House Democrats are postponing plans to return to Washington early for a hearing to address gun violence as Hurricane Dorian bears down on the Florida coast.

The Judiciary Committee announced late Friday it will not hold next Wednesday's planned special hearing. Several lawmakers on the panel represent congressional districts in Florida, where millions of people could be impacted as the potentially devastating hurricane bears toward the coast.

Instead the hearing will be set for the week of Sept. 9. That's when Congress was scheduled to return from its summer recess.

Lawmakers were eager to return to work after back-to-back mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso left nearly two dozen people dead.

Forecasters warn Dorian could hit Florida with dangerous winds and rains late Monday or early Tuesday.
