Save-A-Lot opens in Sistrunk Corridor

Shoppers, city leaders excited about area's progress

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The grand opening of a Save-A-Lot was a sign of progress in the historic Sistrunk Corridor in Fort Lauderdale.

"I've been waiting. I've been putting off going to the store," said Angie Kloepher.

The food store, containing 15,000-square-feet of fresh fruits, veggies, dairy and meats, opened at 510 Northwest 7th Avenue on Thursday.

"If I go anywhere else, I get $140 worth of food. I come here, it stretches it out to $220 worth of food," said shopper Bruce O'Neill.

City leaders credited community redevelopment dollars and fierce determination in fueling Sistrunk's comeback.

"I can't even put in words how excited I am about this. This project is a long time coming," said City Commissioner Bobby DuBose. "We're talking 20 plus years -- it's been driven by the effort and faith of the community."

Last month, police stepped up patrols in the Sistrunk Corridor. The historic area is seeing a rebirth as new shops, businesses and a brand new urban league center open.
