MARATHON, Florida Keys - The Seven Mile Bridge will close temporarily to vehicular traffic during the early morning hours Saturday for the 32nd annual footrace over the convergence of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies are expected to stop traffic for the Seven Mile Bridge Run, which begins at 6:45 a.m. The bridge is expected to reopen at 9 a.m., according to Capt. Chad Scibilia.

The race is set to begin at 7:30 a.m. at the east end of the bridge in Marathon.

Organizer Bobbie Bayles said the field of 1,500 runners has been filled since mid-February. Competitors from more than 30 states and Canada are registered.

The Seven Mile Bridge connects Marathon to the Lower Keys, so traffic between the South Florida mainland and the Upper and Middle Keys is not impacted by the race.

The bridge is the longest of 42 spans on the Florida Keys' Overseas Highway.
