OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – A South Florida cab driver who was shot and nearly killed during a possible road rage incident said he quit his job in search of something safer.
Simon Bertin is a father of seven and head of his household. He said the fact that he survived changed his life forever.
"I almost died," Bertin told Local 10 News. "Without knowing what I did to somebody."
Miami-Dade police have released surveillance video of the shooter and are asking the public for help.
Police said Bertin had apparently stopped to pump gas, but in the process it appears he cut off a bicyclist.
"Seven kids, a wife, cousins, brother, sister -- it's a lot on my plate," Bertin said. "The guy was going to take my life away for no reason, for cutting him off by mistake."
Police said the bicyclist pulled out a gun at the gas station at 715 Opa-Locka Blvd. He fired several shots and video shows two men went running.
Bertin was shot in the neck while sitting in his cab. Police believe the gold chain around his neck saved his life.
Bertin has begun working again as a private driver for Uber, but his family needs help catching up on their bills. Anyone who'd like to assist can email anperez@local10.com.
