NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – An hours-long standoff involving an armed person in North Miami ended early Friday morning.
Officers surrounded a home in the 1400 block of Northwest 120th Street on Thursday night.
Police moved in to try to get to the dangerous suspect. The suspect was eventually taken into custody. It's unclear if the man surrendered.
"We have an armed barricaded subject inside a home in this residential area," said Cmdr. Rafael Estrugo, of the North Miami Police Department.
Members from multiple agencies, including the North Miami Beach, Miami-Dade and Aventura police departments, joined in the operation.
Initial reports indicated the suspect fired shots at officers.
"We are still investigating that," Estrugo said. "As soon as we have that confirmed, I will definitely update you."
They also said it wasn't yet clear if the suspect had any hostages. Local 10 News was told that negotiators were at the scene, and a SWAT team moved into place.
"Right now, there's a perimeter set up, and anyone who is in the area of danger has obviously been removed from the scene," Estrugo said.
Some residents were forced to evacuate for their own safety as the hours-long standoff dragged on.
"It is a little scary. It is," one neighbor said. "I've never seen so many cops all at once."
The neighbor said they had been very concerned by the way the officers came flying in. They continued to push the perimeter back as more officers poured in.
"If they can get him in peacefully, nobody getting hurt, that will be good, definitely," the neighbor said.
The suspect's identity has not been released.
