SWEETWATER, Fla. - A 24-year-old man was charged with stealing a landscaping truck and running a Sweetwater Police officer off the road with it.

Larry Belfon was arrested about 5:40 a.m. Friday.

According to Sweetwater Police, Belfon stole the truck and its trailer from Horse Country in Kendall. The trailer contained about $70,000 worth of landscaping equipment.

Police said an officer tried pulling Belfon over because the trailer had no taillights but he didn't stop. Instead, when the officer pulled up next to Belfon, he swerved the truck and ran the officer onto a sidewalk on SW 109th Avenue.

Police said Belfon jumped out of the work truck near SW 2nd Street and 108th Avenue. The truck kept going and slammed into a fence.

Belfon was arrested shortly afterwards. He was charged with grand theft auto, aggressive battery/assault against a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest without violence.
