Gator rescued near South Pointe Park

Reptile wasn't injured

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. ā€“ Drew Mandala went for a run near South Pointe Park on Sunday morning when he noticed people looking into the water.Ā 

"I came over and there it was. I couldn't believe it,"Ā Mandala said.

Mandala was looking at an alligator.Ā 

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission personnel and a Miami Beach police ranger rescued the gator several hours later, which had gotten lost and was struggling.Ā 

Miami Beach police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said the FWCĀ will hand off custody of the gator to a trapper.Ā 

Alligators are typically found in freshwater.

They can tolerate saltwater for brief periods of time, according to the Smithsonian's National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute.Ā 

The gator was not injured.Ā
