Teen remains critical after being run over by bus

Victim taken Friday morning to Broward Health North Hospital

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. - A 14-year-old boy remains in critical condition after he was run over by a Broward County bus Friday morning.

Just after 9 a.m., BSO deputies responded to reports that a middle school student had been struck by a Broward County bus on the 1200 block of East Sample Rd.

Local 10 obtained surveillance video detailing the seconds just before it happened.

In it, you see the bus pull up. The boy is then seen running past the camera toward the bus.

"A teenager was apparently trying to catch the bus. At some point he became lodged, maybe in the door," said BSO spokeswoman Dani Moschella.

What happened next was not seen on the video, but it appears the boy was dragged about 50 feet to the middle of the intersection where he fell and was run over by the bus," Local 10's Roger Lohse reported.

The camera does, however, show his mother witness the whole thing. You see her (pictured, right) drop everything and frantically run toward the boy.

The boy's injuries were so severe, rescue crews had to first take him to Broward Health North to stabilize him, fearing he might not survive the rescue helicopter flight to Broward Health in Fort Lauderdale.

"He was very critically injured," Moschella said. "They had to get him to the closest hospital as quickly as they could."

"Our thoughts and prayers are with this young man and his family. We are saddened by this tragic incident," said Broward County Administrator Bertha Henry in a statement issued Friday afternoon. "The safety of passengers is a top priority for Broward County Transit."

According to Broward County Transit Division Director Tim Garling, per standard operating procedure, the driver of the bus, Reinaldo Soto, has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Soto has been a bus operator with Broward County Transit since February 2002.
