Three Broward men die changing tire on I-95 in Boynton Beach

Driver has not yet been charged

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - Three men were killed and two more were critically injured in a crash along I-95 in Palm Beach County Friday.

The group of Broward roofing workers were on their way to a Deerfield Beach job when they stopped on the side of the road to fix a flat tire.

Investigators said the men, Andrew Hickey, Christopher Andrews, Robert McHenry, Ernest Woods and Thelonius McCarthy, were changing their tire in the Northbound emergency lane when a car veered out of control and hit them.

Hickey, McHenry and Andrews were killed in the crash.

Terry Boyd, Andrews' mother, told Local 10 that her son's wife is expecting a baby boy next month, when he was to turn 26.

Boyd, who is bedridden by advanced rheumatoid arthritis, said Andrews worked to help her.

Authorities said Woods and McCarthy were being treated in the hospital but were in critical condition.

Florida Highway Patrol is investigating why the driver, Cheryl Lee Daugherty, 42, drove across three lanes of traffic and into the group.

FHP has not yet filed charges against Daugherty and is awaiting toxicology reports.
