Uber driver, 82, killed when speeding Lamborghini crashes into SUV

J. Gerald Smith's wife had dinner waiting for him at home, police say

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. – An 82-year-old Uber driver was killed Wednesday when a speeding Lamborghini crashed into his SUV in Delray Beach, police said.

J. Gerald Smith was killed in Wednesday afternoon's crash at Northeast Sixth Avenue and Northeast First Street.

Delray Beach police said Smith's Buick Enclave was preparing to cross the intersection when it was struck by a yellow Lamborghini. Police said Smith had stopped at the stop sign moments before the crash.

The driver of the Lamborghini, Roger Wittenberns, 60, was taken to Delray Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition.

Police said Wittenberns' girlfriend, Patty Ann McQuiggin, 61, had spent the afternoon eating and drinking with Wittenberns before they left in separate cars -- Wittenberns in the Lamborghini and McQuiggin in her yellow Porsche.

Witnesses told police that they saw both cars speeding north on Northeast Sixth Avenue just before the crash. The posted speed limit is 35 mph.

Investigators said McQuiggin left the scene of the crash in her Porsche and refused to provide a statement. They said she left her Porsche in the parking lot of a nearby restaurant.

Police said Smith's wife had dinner waiting for him, but he never made it home.

Investigators believe that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
